Holiday Version of the Troop 14 Newsletter

EUCHRE WINNER

A great time was had by all at our Annual Euchre Tournament. The winner was Grant Petersen.

The trophy will be presented at the Jan. 8th meeting.

CHARTER DUES NEED TO BE IN BY JANUARY 22ND

Our charter date for next year is changing to December 31st. That means we need dues by January 22nd. For more information, see the emailed newsletter.

CRIME PREVENTION BADGE

On November 27th, Troop 14 worked with Captain Rick Yonker on the Crime Prevention merit badge.

An example showing how to fill out the blue card and Capt. Yonker's notes are available on the Troop Facebook page.

Scouts should also complete the Workbook found at http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/0/07/Crime_Prevention.pdf. The information for Requirement 8f is also found in these notes.

A troop trip to the courts or jail is being planned. Troop 14 may also have a mock trial at Barber Street School in the future as a substitute.

Family accounts have been updated in Troopmaster Web. This is current as of 12-3-2012. This does not yet reflect the popcorn sales if your son sold any. The commission from popcorn will be added 1-1-2013. We are still waiting on trying to sell the remainder of the popcorn. For more information, see the emailed newsletter.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED TRAINING - JANUARY 5TH

Become Red Cross Certified in First Aid/CPR/AED!

The troop now has an instructor for the American Red Cross and will be offering certification classes through T14 four times a year at nearly cost (we hope to recoup the instructor training fee within the first year). ARC classes are $110, but we will be offering the training for HALF as much - $55.

CABERFAE SKI TRIP – JANUARY 18, 2013

If you have registered for the ski trip payment is due no later than January 15th, 2013. A down payment has already been paid to Caberfae so if you cancel you will still be charged for the trip. For those who have expired Forms A and B health forms please submit completed ones by Jan 15, 2012.

SUMMER CAMP SIGN-UP

Wow - We are in for the BEST summer camp EVER! The BSA Michigan Council has consolidated their BSA Boy Scout Camps to ONLY 3 CAMPS in order to offer the BEST, OVER-THE-TOP EXPERIENCE for the boys!

Camp Gerber was chosen to be one of the BEST and that is where we are going!

Summer Camp is a great opportunity for your son to have a GREAT TIME and EARN MERIT BADGES!!! Merit Badges offered will be announced in February. Please note: Boys who are already Eagle often attend to earn additional merit badges for Palm awards (or just because they are interesting) or they might get trained in BSA Lifesaving - with an eye toward a future job as an aquatics lifeguard.

Camp Dates: June 16th-22nd

Cost: Adults - $125, Youth - $275 (Note: this may be discounted)

Due Dates:
  • Money must be in by May 10th - or $50 late fee assessed
  • Health Forms A, B C (including physical) MUST be in BY MAY 10th - or $50 late fee assessed.
Families: Please plan on joining us for dinner on Wednesday, June 19th at 5pm. Details to follow!

Troop 14 Newsletter for December 18th

NEXT TROOP MEETING – EUCHRE PARTY

TROOP 14 PRIOR SCOUTS AND LEADERS from Troop 14 are invited to join T14 scouts and their families this evening for cards and fun! Please, post this on your Facebook. We would LOVE to see this become a Troop14 reunion - or sorts!!

LOVE INC FOOD COLLECTION

Please bring non-perishable food items to the next few meetings. We will be collecting and donating these to Love INC.

In previous years, Troop 14 has been able to donate over 4,000 lbs of food to Love INC because of Haunted Hall. Without this event this year, there has been no drive for food. This has also been a year where other donations to Love INC have been AT AN ALL TIME LOW. We're hoping that each Scout can bring at least two non-perishable items.

CABERFAE SKI TRIP – JANUARY 18, 2013

We have a total of 25 that have registered for the ski trip which means that if you already have a season pass you are able to sign up at the reduced rate of $86.00. Here is how that  price is calculated.

Trip cost $125

$26 - toward gas, pizza and snacks
$39 - All day lift ticket
$29 - Rental
$31 - Accommodations

The reduced cost for anyone that has a season pass is reduced by subtracting the lift ticket cost. The cost is not reduced for the rentals since we are still charged $99 per person from Caberfae.

We have divided up our roster by alphabet and are asking for the following items to be brought from each family for the Court of Honor:

Punch and paper products are taken care of.

We appreciate our families helping out with the different items so that we have a good variety of food.

NEWSPAPER RECYCLING TRUCK UPDATE

Unfortunately, we were unable to fill the truck in the Tri-Cities.

But, to get a better percentage payout (after initial expenses), we have moved the truck to Norton Shores at the corner of Norton and McCracken (the north parking lot of the old Mona Shores Administration Building). Hopefully, the larger demographic area will help. We are asking that Troop families bring their papers (and those of your family/friends/co-workers) to the Troop meetings where we will have a green tub at the gym door to collect them.

Bring sleeping bag, pillow, spending money, warm clothes, hat, gloves, coat, extra socks, swimming suit. Outdoor pool is open for swimming.

Don't forget you equipment (i.e. skis snowboard helmet). Helmets are required. If you don't have one, you will rent one $5.00.

Lessons available for $5.00 must know in advance.

If renting, you must have liability form filled out this form will be available under file - documents at home screen.

Renting Ski- Skier Type (I, II or III), shoe size, weight, height, age, and if helmet is needed (required)

Renting Snowboard - Foot Placement (L or R), shoe size, weight, height, and if helmet is needed (required)

Cost is $125 includes pass, rentals (if needed), food and gasoline cost.

Snowboard rentals are an extra $5.00. Cost does not include helmet rental or lessons.

IS YOUR SCOUT AT LIFE RANK?

If your Scout is working toward Eagle, it is important that you attend this upcoming parent meeting.

If your scout is at Life Rank, the President Ford Council has adopted a new Eagle Scout Rank processing procedure. An email was sent to kids who are currently at Life Rank, but a  Parents' Meeting will be held on Tuesday November 13th to discuss how this impacts your Scout.

There are also some other changes that the BSA will incorporate starting the first of the year 2014. Mr Warner will discuss these at the Parents' Meeting.

Where: Furtaw's house at 17759 Northshore Spring Lake, Michigan 49456
(The Furtaws are located just under 1/2 mile from Old Grand Haven Road on the northside of the road. Split rail fence. House is tan with red shutters and red garage door)

CABERFAE SKI TRIP – JANUARY 18, 2013

Dates and times in the emailed newsletter.

Bring sleeping bag, pillow, spending money, warm clothes, hat, gloves, coat, extra socks, swimming suit. Outdoor pool is open for swimming.

Don't forget you equipment (i.e. skis snowboard helmet). Helmets are required. If you don't have one, you will rent one $5.00.

Lessons available for $5.00 must know in advance.

If renting, you must have liability form filled out this form will be available under file - documents at home screen.

Renting Ski- Skier Type (I, II or III), shoe size, weight, height, age, and if helmet is needed (required)

Renting Snowboard - Foot Placement (L or R), shoe size, weight, height, and if helmet is needed (required)

Cost is $125 includes pass, rentals (if needed), food, and gasoline cost.

Snowboard rentals are an extra $5.00. Cost does not include helmet rental or lessons.

You must be up to date on health forms parts A and B.

Please print permission slip located on registration page and turn it into Mr Hoffman or Mr. Furtaw.

IRON CHEF CAMPOUT

NEW THIS YEAR: The cooking competition will be done in the fashion of “Chopped,” the Food Network hit series hosted by Ted Allen. Each team will be given a box of mystery ingredients and challenged to create three dishes - being sure to have no left-over ingredients when they are done!

Troop 14/Crew 9014 a paper truck at Orchard Market until the middle of November. We only accept newspaper and phone books (no cardboard, no computer paper, no magazines). Nu-Wool, out of Grand Rapids, is providing the truck and will pay us for the paper which is recycled into insulation. Ask your friends, relatives, co-workers, (all your Facebook friends!)  to drop off their newspapers and extra phonebooks at the trailer! This is a convenient location, and if we fill the truck, we may make it a permanent on-going fundraiser! We only have a couple more dates open for families willing to commit to taking one week where they will go and sort/stack the paper on 2 different days. VENTURE CREW  UPCOMING EVENT

Scouts over 14 or finished the 8th grade: You are eligible to join Venturing Crew 9014 on their trip to The Haunted Castle and the Terrorfied woods in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We will stay in their scout lodge both nights, touring the haunts on Friday and working on Saturday.  In December, all volunteers will receive around $25 in their scout accounts for their time. Weekend cost $55 includes gas, lodging, food, haunt tour. Moms, Dads, older sibling sisters are invited on this one!!

W.Y.L.D. is working with the Venturing Crew to design and staff several scenes for the Haunted Trail Run/Walk up in North Muskegon on October 27th. We would like to do something that needs a tree stand.
